Vanessa is the head of the research unit “Transplantation Research”, a member of the faculty of the doctoral programs “Molecular Fundamentals of Inflammation”, “Molecular Medicine” and “Sustainable Health”. Vanessa’s main research interest is the deeper understanding of the gut-liver axis. Currently her group focusses on gut microbiome, gut permeability and innate immunity in various chronic liver diseases. Vanessa also conducts clinical trials to modulate the gut-liver axis with prebiotics or probiotics and she studies the influence of drugs on the gut-liver axis.
